Evidence can also be seen of the next major event in Brindisis history as a staging point for the Crusades. The cathedral, a must-see, dates back to the Knights Templar, although substantially remodelled in the 17th century after an earthquake. To see a true example of a Knights Templar church head to the Tempio di san Giovanni al Sepolcro; built from Norman stone it conforms to the circular plan favoured by the Knights.
Most modern Brindisi life centres around the Corso Garibaldi, a palm-lined stretch that links the train station to the seafront promenade. Many cafes and restaurants are located here and it’s a great place to relax and take in the local atmosphere.

Drive north for 40 minutes on the E55 to arrive at Ostuni, a jewel in the landscape. Locally referred to as the “White Town” for its white walls and buildings, Ostuni has a wealth of historical attractions including the citadel, cathedral and Bishops Palace. The Museo di Civiltà houses the remains of Delia a perfectly preserved 25,000-year-old skeleton found in a local cave.
Torre Guaceto
Torre Guaceto, a 30-minute drive north via the SS16 and SP37, brings you to the nature reserve and protected marine area of Torre Guaceto. A beautiful sandy beach awaits or a hike through the reserve. Divers should seek out the many opportunities to explore the coral reefs off the coast.
Spiaggia Della Purità
Roughly an hour’s drive south, via the SS613 and SS101, is Spiaggia Della Purità. A lively town with cafes, restaurants and nightlife to suit all tastes, the real attraction here is the beach, renowned as one of the best in the Puglia region. Combine your trip with a visit to Gallipoli, a centre of local olive oil production. The history of production can be seen in some of the 35 presses buried beneath the town. Those with a curious disposition should seek out the Museo Civico, a 19th century time capsule featuring many oddities among the ancient relics.
