Plan your trip to Alghero
From Alghero Airport it’s a 20-minute drive, via Strada Provinciale 44, to the centre of Alghero where a host of sightseeing opportunities await. This attractive medieval city on the northwest coast of Sardinia offers an appealing balance of old world charm and modern resort amenities.
Ruled by the Spanish between 1400 and 1700, Alghero is an Italian city with an unusual twist. The old quarter, Barceloneta, meaning “little Barcelona”, is a maze of cobbled streets and has a distinctly Catalan charm. The 16th-century sea walls, built by the Aragonese, help to create Alghero’s unique and historic cityscape.
The new town, clustered around the old city walls, offers an array of dining and shopping options, leading onto an attractive harbour and beachfront.
Those with an interest in design might want to visit Alghero Cathedral, also known as the Cathedral of St Mary the Immaculate. With its impressive bell tower and ornate doorways, it’s a fine example of Catalan Gothic architecture.
The Museum of Religious Art is also worth a look and offers a collection of paintings, woodcarvings and silverware.
Foodies will be in their element with a selection of restaurants serving Alghero’s famous lobsters and local seafood dishes. The city’s Italian-Catalan influences make for some unusual culinary delights.
Nightlife is low-key and focused around the relaxed beachfront and harbour-front bars, though there are late-night discos on the outskirts of the city.
