Arriving in Bloemfontein

Bloemfontein is located within 3-hours’ drive of the Free State’s major drawcards such as the artistic mecca of Clarens, the colourful sandstone mountains of the Golden Gate National Park, the Vredefort Dome and the Big Hole of Kimberley. The mountain kingdom of Lesotho with its opportunities for mountain-biking and hiking is also easily accessed from here.

Beyond Bloemfontein International Airport
If you have time to spare while visiting this historic place, or are looking for some extra distractions while you are in town you would do well to include the following in your plans –
The Orchid House
Head off along the N8 highway and take Wilcocks and Milner Road to the Orchid House, found in the shadow of Naval Hill, just 12 km from the airport. This is a wonderfully peaceful place for a picnic or a walk among the dazzling flowers.
Franklin Nature Reserve and Planetarium
Practically next door, nip in to the Franklin Nature Reserve and take a walk up to the Nelson Mandela Monument among the giraffes and small antelope. Then take the short drive along the crest of Naval Hill to peer into outer space from the first digital Planetarium established south of the equator.
Olievenhuis Art Museum
Come back down to earth as you descend Naval Hill, and make a quick dash across Milner Road to the Olievenhuis Art Museum for tea. Here you can participate in the tradition of afternoon tea while taking in the expansive gardens of this gorgeous Cape Dutch style gallery.
Gallery on Leviseur
Just a few metres down the road, the Gallery on Leviseur offers a peek at the other end of the scale – showcasing work from talented contemporary artists.
Cheetah Experience
If you feel the need to heed the call of the open road, travel in your Avis Hire Car to the Cheetah Experience just outside of Bloemfontein. A tour of this rehabilitation facility will give you a new respect for earth’s fastest land mammal.
On the way out
