North Coast
All Avis car hire branches offer all the services and products needed to make touring the Northern Cape a pleasure, even when you are visiting for business purposes.
Thanks to a long history of mining and an arid sunny climate, the landscapes around Kimberley Airport are pockmarked with mining operations, and stark in their beauty. They are also full of surprises in the form of natural, historical and cultural attractions.
Kimberley itself is an architectural gem, awash with historic sites, museums, and a really Big Hole which is the epicentre of activity in this town. You can even take a guided night time ghost-tour of the Africana Museum, or take a (quick!) drive past Rudd House which is one of South Africa’s most haunted places.
Outside of the urban streets, your Avis hire car gives you access to nature reserves and dams packed with enough animal and birdlife to keep you entertained for a few hours between flights or business meetings.
Overnighters can opt for an economical stay at Oak Rest Guesthouse, or go the whole hog with a pampering break at the elegant Protea Hotel by Marriott Kimberley. Both are located within easy reach of Kimberley Airport.
The quaint suburb of Belgravia is the place to go park your Avis hire car and take a walk around for flashbacks to Kimberley’s glory days as a diamond mining boomtown. There are over 33 historic sites to visit here, and when you have had your fill of history you can hop back into the driver’s seat and visit the following nearby places:
Freddie Tait Golf Museum
Enjoy a round, or at the very least a drink – overlooking the Bob Grimsdell-designed course of Kimberley Golf Club which was founded in 1890 and then pop in to the Freddie Tait Museum. This collection of trophies and memorabilia from over 100 years ago pays tribute to its namesake – an amateur golfing champion who came to a violent end during the Anglo-Boer War.
The William Humphreys Art Gallery
Named after its benefactor, and opened in 1952, this gallery is considered one of South Africa’s finest. Here you can marvel at the works of 16th and 17th century Dutch and Flemish Old Masters along with South African, French and British paintings.
The Flamingo Casino
Offering far more than slot machines and blackjack tables, the Flamingo Casino provides a colourful burst of modern fun options including golf, a wellness spa, restaurants and live entertainment.
Skybar at the Half
Celebrate your discoveries, or perhaps your casino winnings, at the Skybar where locals love to linger when the day is done. Situated at Halfway House beer garden and restaurant, which is fondly known as ‘the Half’, this new addition to the Kimberley skyline offers swish cocktails and tasty platters from its elevated location.
Take your pick for this smorgasbord of Northern Province delights by pre-booking your Avis hire car from our Avis Kimberley Airport Branch.
