Limpopo offers a fascinating abundance of wild animal species, a vivid cultural heritage, and plenty of nature-based opportunities for enjoyment.
The Kruger National Park is an internationally-renowned haven for Big Five game experiences, while the scenic Olifants Valley teems with wildlife and birds, secluded in private nature reserves.
Explore mountains, traverse rivers and dams, delve into history and experience it all with your Avis hire car.
Avis has several branches in Limpopo’s hottest travel destinations providing all the products and services you need to get going.
Simply pick up your Avis car from one of the following destinations and hit the road:
With flights arriving form OR Tambo International every day, our Avis Phalaborwa Airport branch is the starting point for many journeys around this gorgeous Limpopo Town. Take to the road in your Avis hire car and head for the Kruger National Park for a day. Once there, look out over the folds of the Blyde River Canyon, or into the bubbling cauldrons of Bourke’s Luck near Hoedspruit, ride an African elephant or befriend a cheetah at one of the wildlife rehabilitation centres nearby. There are many one-of-a-kind experiences to be had close to Phalaborwa.
Check out life in the slow lane, at tiny Limpopo towns. Pick up some citrus or macadamia nuts from a padstal (roadside stall) in Letsitele. Join the locals for a drink at the pub built inside a massive baobab tree in Gravelotte, or simply walk the abandoned streets of Leydsdorp, which was once a rough and raucous gold rush town.
Whether you are in town for business, a holiday or just passing through, Phalaborwa appeals to the explorer in everyone and offers great opportunities for passing the time no matter how long you stay.
Linger longer if you can; the budget friendly Elephant Walk Guesthouse in town or the ever-so-elegant Bushveld Terrace Guest House, found just 100m from the gates of the Kruger National Park, will be happy to put you up.
Masorini Village Museum
Experience the thrill of walking among the wildlife in the Kruger National Park unescorted. The Masorini is one of the few places in the ‘Park where you can alight from your Avis hire car and walk around. This historic site is found just inside the park, about 11km from the Phalaborwa entrance gate, and shows how people lived in this area long before the arrival of European settlers. You can also take a guided tour to the huts and furnace at the top of Masorini hill for unbelievable views over Kruger’s vast expanses.
The Hoedspruit Endangered Species Centre
Just over an hour’s drive from Phalaborwa you will come across Hoedspruit, which is another hub of safari activities. One of these is the non-profit Hoedspruit Endangered Species Centre, which works tirelessly on a number of breeding programmes for endangered species. Take a guided tour of the centre and get to meet the cheetahs, African wild dogs and blue cranes that call this place home.
Balloon Safaris Hoedspruit
Park your Avis hire car and take to the skies in a hot air balloon to spend an hour or two looking down upon your surroundings. This is an unforgettably scenic experience and a great way to spot game species without disturbing them.
Khamai Reptile Park
Move amongst some of South Africa’s deadliest snakes on an educational walk around this conservation centre. Home to crocodiles, monitor lizards, scorpions, baboon spiders, black and green mambas, boomslangs and Mozambique spitting cobras as well as an assortment of clawed and fanged ‘international’ specimens, it’s a melting pot of all that slithers.
One thing is guaranteed - you won’t have had your fill of this incredible environment by the time you return your Avis hire car to our branch at Phalaborwa Airport – we look forward to welcoming you back.
