Wachau Valley
Head out of Vienna on the A1 for the 1-hour drive to Melk, the beginning of a scenic 39-km drive. Tour Melk’s glorious 11th century abbey and have lunch in one of its many cafes before setting off to follow the Danube as it flows through the Wachau Valley. You’ll be treated to views of the idyllic countryside, dotted with ruined castles, abbeys, forests and terraced vineyards. Take your time, the villages of Willendorf and Dürnstein are both worth a stopover, and when you arrive in the pretty old town of Krems , reward yourself with a glass of local Riesling. It’s a perfect day away from the bustle of Vienna.

Salzburg
