Just 125km from the coast of West Africa, tiny Lanzarote is a melting pot of cultural influences. Designated a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve, the 37-mile-long, 12-mile-wide island (which takes just over an hour to drive from top to bottom) reveals year-round warm weather and myriad landscapes for visitors to explore. With rugged volcanoes and serene beaches, the best way to take in the beauty of Lanzarote is to drive. All the sights are within easy reach with your Avis hire car.
Most people make their way to the south of the island for the postcard-perfect beaches. The three main resorts are Puerto del Carmen, just under five miles south of the airport, Costa Teguise, the same distance north of the airport, and Playa Blanca, a thirty-minute drive south.
The north of the island features some great natural beaches that are a lot quieter. It also has one of the best viewpoints on Lanzarote. Mirador del Río. From your vantage point at the top of a huge cliff, gaze north at the three diminutive islets of the Chinijo archipelago.
To delve into Lanzarote’s history, visit the Castillo de San José in Arrecife. Built at the end of the 18th century, this castle is now home to an impressive collection of modern art. Older still is the town of Teguise; founded in the 15th century, it’s all cobbled streets and colonial mansions.
Road trips around Lanzarote
Everything is easily accessible in Lanzarote in a hire car, and the short distances between destinations make it an ideal place for touring on the roads.Beaches of Lanzarote
Famed for its unspoilt coastline, Lanzarote is bordered by impeccable stretches of sand. On the island’s north shore, the rugged Famara is a favourite with surfers and bohemian beach lovers. At the southernmost tip of the island, Playa Blanca (an exclusive beach resort) is tucked away from the main crowds. The white sands of Papagayo draw locals and visitors, while at Órzola there are natural volcanic pools. All of these beaches can be reached within 40 minutes from capital Arrecife.
Timanfaya National Park
Twenty minutes’ drive up from Playa Blanca, and 30 minutes; from Arrecife, Timanfaya was the site of a major eruption 250 years ago and houses the black volcanic landscapes that Lanzarote is famous for. Designated an area of outstanding natural beauty, the park’s narrow roads are lined with volcanic rock formations and despite its seemingly uninhabitable landscape, a variety of plants – including fig trees and lichen. Stop off for lunch cooked by geothermal heat in the 'El Diablo' restaurant.
El Charco
In the heart of Arrecife, the inland lagoon of El Charco is an atmospheric area with an array of bars and restaurants. An exhibition space, the Sala de Exposiciones de San Ginés, is open daily except Sundays and offers free admission. The lagoon is also the venue for the Fiesta de San Ginés, held in August. The merrymaking includes a fireworks display, traditional island sports events such as sailing and wrestling and even a contest to elect Miss Lanzarote.
